Lotus Root Seeds

1. Seed Preparation: Carefully file or nick the hard outer seed coat at the dimpled end until the cream-colored interior is barely visible, then submerge in clean water to sprout.
2. Sunlight Requirements: Position growing tubs or ponds in an open, unshaded space that receives at least 6–8 hours of full, intense direct daily sunlight.
3. The Muddy Secret: Plant the sprouted seeds in a large, watertight container filled with 6–8 inches of rich, heavy organic clay-loam soil, covering it with 4–6 inches of standing water.
4. Water Management: Maintain constant standing water above the soil line at all times; never allow the container to dry out or empty.
5. Harvesting Window: Harvest in late autumn or winter when the large floating green leaves naturally begin to yellow and die back. Reach into the soft mud at the bottom to gently extract the connected root chains.
